Five Years On : Alumni
Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery 15th February - 13th May 2018. Commissioned by New Art West Midlands
Five Years On was an exhibition that brought together new works by six New Art West Midlands artist alumni from past editions, one from each of the participating colleges. We reveal what happened next in the careers of these artists, giving a valuable update on both their work and their journey after art school.
Since 2013 New Art West Midlands presented the best of new work emerging from the region’s art schools. In the first five years over 150 artists featured in the annual exhibitions, which attracted a collective audience of over 500,000 people, demonstrating how the showcase has become an important annual event in the arts calendar.
The artists were Caroline Ali, Lorna J Brown, Abigail Day, Theo Ellison, Matt Parker and Chris A Wright. The show was accompanied by a free publication with commissioned texts by artists Dan Auluk and Natalie Ramus on the West Midlands art scene, and a curatorial essay reflecting on the future arts ecology in the region.
