The walls of the Garden were built for the practical reason of protecting the original vegetable garden, but still highlight the sensation of being cocooned from the dangerous world outside.

A 'periscope' was attached to the pagoda. Observation is a key process that is used in asserting knowledge, power and control. Conversely, they are also tools that lead to a feeling of insecurity. The periscope provides a way of looking at the world in detachment, either for analysis or to avoid being watched. It enables us to spy from a sheltered position, so the viewer gains confidence; whether looking at wildlife, to overcome fears we have of our surroundings, to look at the world in a different way or, extending the metaphor, to engage with an artwork for the first time.

On a slice of tree trunk, growth rings are labelled from the centre progressing outwards. The concentric locations feel like a ripple from the viewer out to the wider world, but also exaggerate the sense of the viewer's enclosure.
