Stephanie Douet

Ming Computers

The West has a long fascination with the Orient – eighteenth century Chinoiserie furniture blithely overlaid the familiar shapes of European furniture and ornaments with random oriental patterning and images.  Douet draws a parallel between the 18th century desire for the art of the mysterious East and our own modern love-affair with Eastern technology.

She highlighted the sculptural qualities of bog-standard office equipment by ornamenting it, as antique office furniture such as plan chests and writing desks were once ornamented - making the familiar unfamiliar.

"I've tried to copy the way that Ming painters follow the forms and proportions of the vases they decorated, pretending that I'm an ancient craftsman just doing another job".
